Concrete Cowboys: MUSIC
Thanks For Nothin' (Click For Lyrics/Story)
(Concrete Cowboys)
Written by Travis Dow
Wrote this in Nashville in 2000 during my ill-advised grab for country songwriter superstardom.
I had gotten a divorce about 3 years earlier, so I sort of knew what I was talking about, though everything she got I willingly gave up, so it's not completely autobiographical, especially since I was only married for 2 years, and not 16-odd.
I had a helluva time getting the "little somethin' to ease the fall" line, for some reason. I had about three other things there over time. Of course, now that line seems obvious, but it took awhile to get there.
Chad dug this one right off the bat, though. I think we ended up reversing the order of the verses, which was his idea.
It's always interesting to see how dancers react to the time changes here. Sometimes they keep right on going, but occasionally we get some confused looks.

Well the bank called this mornin’ and they told me the news
That you’re now the proud owner of whatever you choose
Between the cars and the mortgage, I’ll just wish you the best
But to help me start over I have one small request…
Chorus:
I’ll take a penny for the heart you broke
I think that’s only fair
It ain’t worth a penny more you know
Since you’re not there
I’ll take a penny for the troubled mind
And another for the tears I’ve cried
A little somethin’ to ease the fall
Thanks for nothin’ at all
Well I sat down last night and I worked up the figures
Just what you have cost me over sixteen-odd years
And it may sound cold-hearted but I thought you should know
Just how much I’m losin’ and how much you owe…
Repeat Chorus
